A director of the Bertrand Russell Society (elected since 1973), this year I attended the annual BRS conference at Iowa City, our first such meeting hosted by the Iowa university's philosophy department.

Speakers included Gregory Landini of the U of Iowa; Peter Stone of Stanford University in California; Tim Madigan of St. John Fisher College in Rochester, NY; Emilio Reyes LeBlanc of the U of Toronto; Dorothea Lotter of the U of Central Arkansas; Matt McKeon of Michigan State U; Christopher Pincock of Purdue U; Francesco Orilia of Italy's Università di Macerata; David Blitz of Central Connecticut State U; Allan Hillman of Purdue; and South Africa-born Alan Schwerin of Monmouth U in New Jersey.  Also there were Mr. and Mrs. Chad Trainer; David Henehen of Rochester, NY; David White of St. John Fisher College in Rochester, NY; Ololade Olakanmi, my friend who is a pre-med student that just graduated from Grinnell College; and others, including local students.  Over 50 attended, and high points besides the papers that were read included two meals in downtown restaurants, where the streets are clear of cars, musicians performed while children played and townspeople sat around talking.  Iowa City has been called one of the ten best cities in which to retire, and after only a few days there it became easy to understand why.

Presidential candidates (Clinton, Carter, Giuliani, etc.) are known for breakfasting at Hamburger Inn downtown, and as the above photo shows several of us dined there.  Madigan, in fact, convinced the waitress that he had come to throw his hat in the ring - she believed him!  Later, he bought a hat, then found nowhere to throw it.

Below, a souvenir photo of Clinton's visit.

We toured the city. Warren met his U of Northern Iowa college newspaper editor, Gordon Strayer, at a Unitarian meeting at the city's Shakespeare Theater.  Madigan with hat couldn't find a 7-11.

At the Amana Colonies

Iowa in the mid 1880s was chosen by two utopian groups, the Old Order Amish, in 1846, and the Community of True Inspiration (the Amana Society), in 1855.  The Amana Colonies, to the surprise of Madigan (who was born in Buffalo) started out from Buffalo.  We spent time in one of the towns in which an estimated total of 400 live.

In a rented car, I took Madigan and White on a 750-mile tour of Iowa.  Great fun!  We made it back to Cedar Rapids (Quaker Oats town) just in time to fly back to the East.
